Laundry detergent | Retire for the Fun of it

1 quart (4 cups) boiling water.
1 bar of Fels Naptha soap (grated)
2 cups of 20 Mule Team Borax
2 cups of Arm and Hammer Washing Soda

In a 4 quart saucepan, bring 1 quart of water to a boil and gradually add grated Fels Naptha soap. Stir mixture on a low to medium heat temperature until all soap is melted to a smooth texture.

Add 2 cups of Borax and 2 cups of Washing Soda and some hot tap water as needed, stir well until all soaps are dissolved. Gradually add the rest of the 2 gallons of hot water from the tap and keep stirring on low to medium heat until well mixed. Warning: don’t let it boil over. Now let soap mixture cool. Note: the more stirring as it becomes cool, the less separation of water and gelled soap. Some gelling is normal and the soap will need to be stirred each time it’s used.

Only 1/4 cup is needed for each load of laundry. You now have about 2 ¼ gallons of soap for only pennies a load.

Your unscented soap will smell wonderful and fabric softener may not be needed. The Fels Naptha bar is ideal for pre-treating stains as noted on the label. Recycle old laundry jugs or other plastic gallon containers for your grandma tested, homemade laundry soap.
